Prince Albert Olive Festival 2011
This celebration is so much more than just another olive festival. The Prince Albert Olive Festival from 30 April to 1 May offers two days of foodie fun seasoned with a liberal helping of arts, crafts, history and culture. Whether you want to be the olive pip spitting champion of the Great Karoo or you just want to savour the taste of organic olive paste on warm, homemade bread straight from the oven, the Prince Albert Olive Festival is for you.
Our village lies in a fertile valley near the Swartberg mountain range and has the perfect climate and soil for olive growing. Every year our Karoo town celebrates the bounty of our local olive groves in grand gourmet style. Visit one of the olive farms in the area to examine the fruit, see the oil presses in action and taste the final product. What a great experience!
If you tire of olives there is fierce competition to see who will walk away with the award for the Best Food Stall. Then you can taste delicious organic Guernsey cheeses, the freshest figs and dried fruit selections from heaven. Those who enjoy wine can pop into our renowned wineries or sample witblitz distilled and on sale at the local museum. Wander the main street and call on the arts and crafts stores or watch festival goers from the stoeps of cafes and restaurants while you sample fresh, locally-sourced and lovingly-prepared goodies.
Storytellers regale visitors with local legends. There is a fabulously frightening late-night ghost walk tour of the town. Historians, botanists and bird guides conduct energetic and inspiring tours of the district.
Prince Albert is one of the best places to see the stars and planets clearly. Special star gazing events will be open to you. An Open Gardens and Homes tour reveals the creative ways Prince Alberters adapt to their environment. There is a Miss & Master Olive contest that sees young beauty kings and queens strutting their stuff for olive-related prizes and local musicians of all ages and styles "Play for Change" in the main street. We are proud that the annual Prince Albert half marathon and 10km run are part of the Olive Festival.
